50 + (3x - y) = x + (2x - 16). Combine like terms to change the 2nd part to get 3x - 16. 50 + 3x-y = 3x - 16. Subtract 3x from both sides to get 50 - y = -16. Subtract 50 from both sides to get -y = - 66, or y = 66. 90 - 50 = 40 = 3x - 66. Add 66 to both sides to get 3x = 106, or x = 35 1/3.
