The answer is; With each recharge, some amount of energy is lost

Recharging is not 100% efficient, meaning not all energy stored will be transferred. Some of it will be lost as heat energy. This because, as the electrons travel, some of their energy is lost through resistance. Therefore with each recharge, the percentage charge gets lower and lower.
