Carbonation carbonation occurs when a fossil fuel is burned and the carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide then mixes into the clouds and water vapour. When it rains, the carbon dioxide and water mix forming a weak carbonic acid. This weak carbonic acid then falls and erodes away limestone.
