Freezing and thawing of water increase the erosion of rocks especially when this water enters the crevices of the rocks. This is because of the volume of water changes with temperatures. Water has the lowest volume and highest density at 4 degrees centigrade. When the water freezes, the ice is larger in volume. Therefore, the water in a crevice will cause pressure on the rock when it freezes. This freezing and thawing creates stress in the rocks and eventually splits it.
