Okay, so I know this isn't a spot on explaination...but from what I can gather from my source (my history-study-guide-thing I got for class)--
women would sometimes hold jobs outside the home such as being:
Maids,
Cooks,
and Nurses.
So I know that wasn't the best explanation but I hope it helped
