why is it that prokaryotic cells are generally smaller than eukaryotic cells? How are
they able to exist at a size less than the usual lower limit of 10 um for cell size?

prokaryotes are smaller because they lack internal structures like mitochondria, organelles which are embedded in the membrane just like the eukaryotic cells.
