The southern colonies were mostly aranged by cash crops. They made huge amounts of cotton, wheat, tobacco, corn, and similar things, because they had a good climate for that so they could export it and earn loads of money. This is how the southern states became wealthy and land owners became something like nobility, important rich figures that were respected.
