the unknown number = x

twice a number = 2 × x

= 2x

Three more than twice a number = 2x + 3

Three more than twice a number is greater than negative fifteen:

2x + 3 > -15

2x > -15 - 3

2x > - 18

Divide both sides by 2

x > -18/2
