The Outsiders is a novel about the coming-of-age and the struggles of social status when growing up. Young readers could identify with the novel as they might be going through the same struggles as the characters, and the novel might relate to them. Children growing up feel pressured to seem 'cool' and are very interested in how others see them, which is a main aspect of the novel.
