Answer:

The murder of Lennie is a human rights issue. George killed Lennie because he didn't want him to feel pain if he allowed the other man to shoot him. So he decided to find Lennie as fast as he could before the man could get him to end his life with peace. George wanted to kill Lennie himself but out of love.
