Using the rate function given and the subtraction operation, the increase in the population is 8

The rate of increase per year :

  • 500 + 4t

Increment in the third year :

  • t = 3 :

500 + 4(3)

500 + 12 = 512

Increment in 5th year :

  • t = 5

500 + 4(5)

500 + 20 = 520

Change in size between 5th and 3rd year :

  • 520 - 512 = 8

Hence, population increased by 8 cattle.
