Why do nonmetals form anions when they react to form compounds?

Anions are basically atoms that carry a negative charge. A negative charge indicates that the atom has gained electrons . Atoms that gain electrons are nonmetals in group 6,7,8 since they lack a full stable outer shell so when they gain electrons they will form anions which as i mentioned previously are atoms with a negative charge.
