you could say 4 to the second power which is basically 4 times 4 which equals 16

Exponents mean that you multiply the base by itself the amount of times that the value of the exponent is. For example 2 to the power of 2 is 4 because 2 × 2 is 4. 16 can be written as 4^2 or 4 × 4, because 4 × 4 is 16. I hope this helps!
