Algebraic expressions are strings of numbers, variables and mathematical operations. Equivalent expressions are those that look different but turn out to be the same. For example: 4 * ( x + 5 ) = 4 x + 20. Or x^2 - 1 = ( x + 1 ) * ( x - 1 ).
