Generally speaking, how does elaboration help students learn new information?

When we say elaboration, this is when we add more information or detail in order to further explain and understanding something. In the case of the students, elaboration can help them learn new information very quickly in a way that they can utilize the information that have been stored for years and they can organized these in an hierarchal way.
