In the photic zone, the concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide is higher relative to dissolved oxygen. This is surface layer of the ocean that directly receives sunlight. This uppermost part of the ocean which is sufficiently illuminated permits photosynthesis to occur for phytoplanktons and plants, and this is known as the euphotic zone.
