she earns 500 for every 1000 in merchandise. It it depends on what you are finding.

So lets say she earns 500. that means she sold 1000. We we know that 500 does not equal 1000. But somehow we have to make them equal. To to make 500 = 1000 I would have to divide 1000 by 2. So:
500 = 1000/2

So if y = earnings and x = how money she sold then:
y = x/2.
