The term axiom is used to describe statements that is taken to be true and can not be proofed. The axioms are taken as the most true statements (more true than theorems and conjectures) and are used as a starting points for other proofs and argumentation.  Proof is the sufficient evidence for the truth of a statement. So, in order to obtain a proof several true statements (axioms) must be used.
