In water heat travels up much faster than it travels down.Explain.

Image how water molecules react when heated or cooled.  
(I'm presuming that you heating in a glass beaker or other such container)
The hotter water becomes the more excited the water molecules become and so so closer to a gas state. This means they are less dense than the surrounding water and move up. 
As the hot water is less dense than the cold it will not travel "downward" until it has cooled enough
