First do 41-5 which equals 36, then do 36 divided by 2 which equals 18 and that is your answer.

you can use algebra to answer this question:
suppose the unknown to be 'x'
then the double of the unknown would be '2x'
according to the given situation:
2x + 5 = 41
2x= 41-5
2x = 36
x = 36/2
x = 18
