you have to square root it.

To undo the square you take the square root of both sides

[tex] x^{2} =2[/tex]                                        equation
 
 [tex] \sqrt{ x^{2} } = \sqrt{2} [/tex]               square root both sides

[tex]x= \frac{+}{-} 1.41421356237[/tex]     x=1.4...
