You said that                        2x² - 6  =  42

Add  6  to each side:            2x²        =  48

Divide each side by  2 :         x²        =  24

Take the square root of each side:

                                              x         =  √24

                                              x  =  +4.9  (rounded)
                                       and
                                              x  =  -4.9   (rounded)
