Explain how you can use absolute value to compare a score with the record for the event when scores are given as integers.

As absolute value is the distance of the number from 0 on the number line, it does not matter if one integer is a negative value or a positive value. If one score is in the negatives, say -5 and one score is a positive value, +5, they would be equal in terms of absolute value.
