I believe the answer is: solitary confinement and individual cells.

Initially, the Pennsylvanian imprisonment was designed to rehabilitate criminals that often caused problems / violence outburst in normal prison.
The solitary confinement and individual cells in this prison was created to minimize the interaction between the existing criminals.
