A wire 31 cm long is cut into two pieces. the longer piece is 5 cm longer than the shorter piece. find the length of the shorter piece of wire

Let the longer piece be x+5
Let the shorter piece by x

Both the wires together make 31cm so

x + x + 5 = 31
2x + 5 = 31
2x = 26
x=13

The shorter piece of the wire is 13cm.
