Why do you think some christians considered heresy such a threat?

Because The heretics believed in things that the governing body of the church didn't believe in.  The church afraid that the Heretics would divide the influence that church has toward its followers or even weakening the power that they have within the Government (at that time, the church control a lot of major government officials)
