Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, a form of bacteria that is potentially fatal to humans in North and South America. It is known to be transmitted to humans by bites of infected tick species. It is especially dangerous when the tick bites a person in the region of the head.
