How were the Sumerians different from other people of their time

While the other were living in the Stone Age, the Sumerians were different because they were  the first to establish civilization.  They also did it thousands of years before races started to create their own civilization.  With very few resources they were able to create a variety of things such as writing, arithmetic, sewage system and organized labor to name a few.
