why does meiosis produce 4 sperm cells but only one ovum?

Because the second polar bodies will all die out only leaving the ovum in female animals while sperm does not die out,because the cytoplasm is divided equally for sperm but the cytoplasm all goes to one egg..so yeah you're welcome:)
