The correct answer is the sea, or more precisely the ocean. It is a sea novel about a sea captain who believes that his son is being chased by a colomber, that is, a shark that wants to kill its marked enemy, and will restlesly follow it until it catches it. Something like the alligator in Peter Pan who keeps following captain Hook.
